Please Stop Using Internet Explorer for Canvas

Canvas announced moving the Microsoft browser Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) to ‘Functional Support”:

“Upcoming Canvas Changes

IE11 Functional Support: March 31
On March 31, Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) will transition from a fully supported browser to a functionally supported browser. As future Canvas releases take place, Internet Explorer may begin to exhibit slight visual differences from other browsers, but these differences will not restrict product functionality or accessibility.”  From Canvas Support March 5th, 2018

“Functional support” is tech speak meaning it will no longer be supported fully but still should work.

Those of you who have participated in any of our Canvas training will find this as no surprise. We have warned you since we began rolling out Canvas in 2016 that Canvas behaves differently in IE11 and that Microsoft is moving to eliminate the Internet Explorer browser.

How does this affect you? It really should not as long as you use the recommended browsers of Chrome, Firefox or Safari. If you find yourself on a PC with only Internet Explorer all the Canvas functionality should be there but it may appear visually different. Some may find this confusing. If you have a student in one of your labs having issues make sure the student is using one of the preferred browsers.

Canvas works well with these browsers and is very mobile friendly:

  • Google Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari on Macintosh
  • Mobile browsers on smartphones and tablets
