Add alt text to an image in Canvas

Choose the simplest correct treatment: meaningful alt text for informative images, decorative status for purely decorative images.

How to add alt text in Canvas

Select the image in the Rich Content Editor.

Edit the Canvas Page, Assignment, Discussion, Announcement, or other content. Select the image, then choose Image Options.

Describe what the image contributes.

In Alt Text, write the information a student needs from the image in this context. Keep it concise for a simple image. Do not use the filename as the description.

Mark purely decorative images as decorative.

Use Canvas's Decorative Image option only when the image adds no information and can be skipped without losing meaning.

Select Done, then Save.

Run the Canvas Accessibility Checker while you are still editing, or return to UDOIT afterward, to make sure the missing-alt-text issue is resolved.

Charts, diagrams, and complex images need more.

A chart, diagram, infographic, map, or other dense visual may communicate too much information for a useful one-sentence alt description. Give it a concise alt text that identifies the visual and its purpose, then provide the full equivalent information in nearby page text.

Summarize the visual in the alt text.

Identify what the visual is and the main point a student should take from it.

Put the full information in normal page text.

For a chart, include the important values and trend. For a process diagram, explain the sequence or relationships. Students should be able to get the same instructional information without seeing the visual.

Keep the description close to the visual.

Place the detailed explanation immediately before or after the image so students do not have to hunt for it.
