Make a table accessible in Canvas

Use tables for data, give the data real headers, identify their scope, and add a useful caption.

What UDOIT / Canvas may flag: table missing headers, header scope or caption.

First question: does this need to be a table?

Use a table for tabular data—information where rows and columns have a relationship. Do not use a table just to position text or make a page look tidy.

Create or select the data table.

Use the Canvas Rich Content Editor table tool. Keep the table as simple as possible.

Identify header cells.

Select the header row or header cells. Open the Table / Cell properties and set the appropriate cells to Header cell.

Set scope for row or column headers.

Use Column scope for column headers and Row scope when a left-hand header labels the rest of its row.

Add a short table caption.

The caption should tell students what the table contains—not repeat all of its data.

Run the Accessibility Checker.

Canvas specifically checks table captions, table headers and header scope.

Use the Rich Content Editor for ordinary tables. Canvas lets you set header-cell type and scope in Table / Cell properties, so you usually do not need to edit HTML.
